Both Chelsea have a mountain to climb in their second legs with Chelsea 3-0 down to German giants Bayern Munich. However, European nights are special nights. We have seen many football miracles happen down the years on European nights and it is truly not over till the fat lady sings.

We Love Sport take a trip down memory lane to bring you the 5 greatest British European comebacks to help all you Chelsea fans still believe.

In 2012 Chelsea were in disarray following the sacking of head coach André Villas-Boas after getting hammered 3-1 in Naples in the 1st leg. Chelsea were written off and were heading out of the Champions League.

However, Chelsea had other plans.

Liverpool were flying in 2019. They had reached the Champions League final the season before and were challenging Man City for the Premier League title.

A mouth watering tie was drawn against Barcelona but Liverpool were still the clear favourites. However, things went from bad to worse in Spain with a Lionel Messi masterclass giving the Catalans a 1st leg lead of 3-0… game over.

A magical night in Liverpool ensued with Barcelona stunned by the Anfield crowd and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side.

In 2006 little old Middlesbrough were playing in Europe under Steve Mclaren and stunned everybody by reaching the semi-final. They were drawn against Steaua Bucharest and managed to escape a difficult 1st leg away tie only 1-0 down. However, no away goal in the bank.

An electric Riverside Stadium was silenced after 25 minutes with the ‘Boro 3-0 down on aggregate and the dream of a European final looking a distant dream.

Step up Massimo Maccarone…

Dubbed the ‘Miracle of Instabul’ and quite simply an absolutely insane night of football.

It wouldn’t be an understatement to say Liverpool were absolutely destroyed and ripped apart in the first 45 minutes of the 2005 Champions League final. At half time they amazingly only found themselves 3-0 down but you wondered what the full time score would be.

However, in the 54th minute we heard the famous piece of commentary from Clive Tyldesley. “In towards Gerrard!!! Hello! Hello! Here we go!!!” and as they say the rest is history.

Without doubt the greatest comeback in European Cup history.

United had already performed an incredible comeback in the semi-final against Juventus but this would top it.

In the final they found themselves outplayed and 1-0 down with the treble dream looking unlikely. United piled forward in the final 10 and created chance after chance but with the clock ticking into the 90 minute mark it all looked over.

“Corner to Manchester United. Can Manchester United score? They always score……”
