22 years in the making: Amir Khan vs Kell Brook

YouTube, iPhone’s, Coronavirus, Lionel Messi. Things nobody had ever heard of when Kell Brook and Amir Khan first began this rivalry. It’s been a very long time since Khan went to the 2004 Olympics ahead of Kell Brook. Years have gone by since the two had a war of words on Sky Sports’ show “Ringside”. The animosity has been building between the two men since the amateur’s and now on February 19th, in Manchester at the AO Arena at 149 pounds.

The Rivalry

Amir Khan was an Olympic Silver Medallist in 2004 who eventually became a unified world champion and Kell Brook, Sheffield’s own IBF champion. The two have had a career-long feud, consisting of genuine hatred. On Ringside, Khan stated that he schooled Kell Brook in the amateur’s and in the middle of February. That’s never been confirmed. There is one absolute fact though, Amir Khan was the only boxer to represent Great Britain in the 2004 Olympics. Kell Brook was also in the running to head to the Olympics, but he was deemed not good enough and Amir Khan was the sole representative. Whilst this does not prove that Khan “schooled” Brook, it is clear that when younger, those in authority preferred Khan.

Ever since then, the two went on very different paths, with very different trajectories. It took a decade for Kell Brook to fully get on the radar of Amir Khan. It was not until Brook became a world champion that Khan began to entertain the conversation. Khan was a world-renowned star at this point and despite all of the talk, he span away from the Brook fight. Khan went on record to say he would drop down “a few leagues” to knock out Brook once and for all, but that was in 2014 and that’s still not happened.

Brook and Khan hate each other. It’s a fight that should have happened years ago (the case for most great rivalries in boxing) and Brook believes that Khan has ducked him. Khan has never shown any respect to Brook, so it is the Sheffield man that probably is more emotionally involved in this rivalry. But make no mistake, both men despise one another and the rivalry will finally head to the ring on the 19th of February.

The verbal sparring ended up quietening down as Amir Khan was absolutely desperate for the Floyd Mayweather fight, despite a few embarrassing losses to people miles apart from Floyd Mayweather.

Chalk and Cheese

Amir Khan and Kell Brook have taken very different routes to be at this point. Amir Khan’s performance at the 2004 Olympics saw him become a golden boy of British boxing very quickly. Bar his shock loss in 2008 to Breidis Prescott, he has had a very similar path to the likes of Anthony Joshua, who received a huge boost in interest after the Olympics. Khan ended up heading to America and becoming a superstar after winning a world title just 14 months after his loss, 4 years after becoming professional. You can never say a fighter was gifted anything, but he certainly got a very favourable route to the top. Despite his susceptibility to a huge punch, Khan’s chin held up relatively well enough to the point he still kept his respect as he was known as someone who was always game. He only fought twice in the UK between his first title win and 2018, further showing his superstardom. Khan was desperate for the Floyd Mayweather fight for years, but “Money” never entertained it after a few too many losses for Khan. The Bolton boy eventually got a big money fight, against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Alvarez knocked Khan out, which saw Khan take a 2-year hiatus from the sport of boxing.

Kell Brook did not have the same journey. Brook ended up going pro a year before Khan due to not being selected for the Olympics. His young career was not glamorous. He only fought outside of England once in a decade. He did not even see a British title until he was 17-0 and professional for 4 years. Khan had a world title by that point. Brook got to the Inter-Continental level but still did not get the respect or praise from the worldwide boxing community. It was not until Brook went into Shawn Porter’s backyard and won a majority decision that he was finally recognised as one of the world’s best. Kell Brook became an IBF champion ten years into his career. A whole decade of grafting relatively unnoticed. Bar the Carson Jones fight (which Brook won by majority decision), he had never really been tested at any level. It was not until the Porter fight where he was in a barnstormer of a fight, but the man from Sheffield took the world title. Brook never unified his division as Gennady Golovkin defeated him in 2016, who ironically lost to Canelo a year later.

It was complete Chalk and Cheese for the two. One man saw world championship success 4 years, despite there being obvious doubt over his chin, whilst the other dominated across the board and waited a decade. It is clear to see why Brook has such disdain for Khan.

Why now?

A fight 23 years in the making. Both men 35 years of age. 6 years ago, both men were viciously beaten by the best in the world. They are both past the world stage. They’ve had a few too many defeats against the best, but they have still not fought each other. Whilst neither of them will admit it, they are past their best. Maybe not on the world stage, but every fight fan in Britain has debated this for the entire career of both men. It is time to end this story.

For a while, this fight could have been for an undisputed championship of the world. Whilst Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury debate who is the best heavyweight in British boxing, the smaller men in Brook and Khan have been debating who truly is the best out of them for the best part of a quarter-century. Whilst it is a few years too late, there is interest in this fight. There is no excuse for either man. There is a rematch clause, but on the 19th of February, Manchester will play host to Britain’s longest grudge match.
