This weekend sees an unusual anomaly in the football calendar, with no professional domestic men’s football taking place. While we see multiple international breaks taking place during a season, this one is different, with no England fixtures being arranged for the weekend slots. Why, might you ask? Answer: the FA Women’s Super League.
It’s because the weekend of the 13th and 14th November has been scheduled to host the annual FA Women’s Football Weekend with all the domestic football attention on the women’s game with matches in both the Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship getting the spotlight.
The fixture planners have given us one glorious weekend of action to coincide with this special weekend. In one of the biggest derbies in the English game, Tottenham will play host to Arsenal, current league leaders and one of the most successful clubs in English Women’s football. That game will take place on Saturday before we move into a mighty clash between the runners up for last year’s FA Women’s Super League, Manchester City going head to head with the champions, Chelsea.
In the FA Women’s Championship, meanwhile, it’s a top-of-the-table clash as second-place Liverpool travel to first-place Durham in the hunt for the league’s single promotion place.
Past editions of Women’s Football Weekend have seen record-breaking attendances and plenty of drama, and with these fixtures, 2021 should be no different.
Manchester City vs Chelsea, Sunday November 14, 3pm
Manchester City will be hoping they can arrest their worst ever start to a Barclays FA Women’s Super League season when Chelsea visit them over Women’s Football Weekend. Until October’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup semi-final, Chelsea had never won in 90 minutes at the Academy Stadium, but their 3-0 victory there was Manchester City’s heaviest defeat at home since 2014.
Chelsea on the other hand will know that perfection is the only option if they want to keep in touch with league leaders Arsenal.
Tottenham vs Arsenal, Saturday November 13, 1:30pm
The North London Derby has become a firm fan favourite fixture of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League calendar ever since Tottenham’s promotion to the top flight of women’s football two seasons ago. However, Spurs have only ever scored one goal against Arsenal in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, and are yet to claim a single point off the Gunners.
They did manage to take the lead in their recent Vitality Women’s FA Cup quarter-final, but Arsenal came back to win 5-1. They will be confident of maintaining their 100% start in the league.
Everton vs Manchester United, Sunday November 14, 12.30pm
Everton and Manchester United both started the season as potential challengers for the third Champions League spot. Yet, Everton’s poor start to the season saw manager Willie Kirk leaving the club, with this match being new coach Jean-Luc Vasseur’s second game in charge.
New Manchester United boss Marc Skinner, however, has had a strong start to the league. Despite a chastening 6-1 defeat to Chelsea, United held Manchester City to a draw. A victory for United here could firmly establish them as favourites for third place come the end of the season.
