England’s greatest collide. Manchester United vs Liverpool

It is a fixture known throughout every inch of the world – if you were to ask any person to name you a major sporting rivalry very few would be unable to name this game. Manchester United vs Liverpool, the greatest inter-city rivalry in club sport, contested between England’s two most successful clubs of all time. A rivalry so fierce, it arguably trumps those between their inner-city rivals, Manchester City and Everton, in importance each year. This is Manchester United vs Liverpool.

The stats do not lie

This rivalry doesn’t just exist on the pitch, the cities of Liverpool and Manchester have long-held dislike for each other, fuelled by the close proximity of both cities and their historic industrial battles over the centuries. It was during the heydays of both clubs however, the 1970s and 1980s for Liverpool and 1990s and 2000s for Manchester United, that this rivalry really began to boil as the two clubs endured great spells in each other’s shadows as each dominated the football pyramid for close to two decades each.

There is no denying the success of these sides, they hold the title for most successful English teams in every area, domestic, European and globally with 39 league titles, 9 European Cups/Champions Leagues, 19 FA Cups, 13 League Cups, 4 UEFA Cups/Europa Leagues between them plus so much more!

As can be seen from the head-to-head stats, both clubs can claim some form of territory over the other – United have a claim to most successful club in the Premier League with their 20 league titles (last won in 2012/13) slightly eclipsing Liverpool’s 19. Most Manchester United fans will remind you at this point that 18 of Liverpool’s League Titles were won before the launch of the Premier League with the club winning just once since 1989-90 with the victory for Jurgen Klopp’s men in 2019-20.

Liverpool on the other hand can rightfully hold their crown as the United Kingdom’s most successful team in Europe with 6 glorious European Cups/Champions League wins, having lifted the trophy twice since 2005 (2005 and 2019) and also finishing second twice in that time (2007 and 2018). On top of this, Liverpool have also lifted the UEFA Cup on 3 occasions and the UEFA Super Cup on 4. Manchester United, while completely dominant in the league from the early 90s, have won just 3 European Cups (their last being in 2008), once lifting the Europa League (2017) and one UEFA Super Cup alongside a victory in the long-lost European Cup Winner’s Cup.

Moving on from history

Since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, things have not been all rosy for Manchester United. Having won 5 Premier League titles between 2007 and 2013, the club has failed to lift the ultimate prize since and have been through 4 full-time managers in that time. There was great excitement upon the introduction of former club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjær in 2018 with him winning 14 of his 19 matches in charge – but very little has happened on the field since with 3 semi-final defeats in the 2019-20 season and a defeat in the UEFA Europa League final to Villareal in 2020/21 the only glimpses of possible success. Ole has however given the club their first back-to-back top 4 finishes in the Premier League since Ferguson’s departure with a 2nd place finish last time out guaranteeing Champions League football this season. With the high profile and long-awaited purchases of Jadon Sancho, Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, expectations are high for this season, but the club is struggling to perform as expected – they go into this game having failed to win in the Premier League since 19th September and currently sit in 5th place.

The situation at Liverpool is a stark contrast, having pained their way through nearly 2 decades of disappointment, failure and underachievement, Jurgen Klopp has spearheaded an incredible resurgence for England’s historical great. Slowly building a team over the last 6 years that not only maintains financial stability for the club (after being literally hours from death), but is consistently challenging at the top table, widely regarded as one of the greatest teams in the world currently. The smart introductions of Allison Becker in goal, Virgil Van Dijk in defence, Fabinho in a CDM role and the truly world-class front three of Mane, Salah and Firmino has turned this Liverpool team around. Having lost in the Europa League final in 2016, the club has since gone on to win the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA World Club Cup and finally their first Premier League since 1989/90. After a disappointing campaign last year, due to a team decimated with injury, they bounced back to finish a highly respectable third place and go into this fixture second in the league and the only undefeated team in the competition.

NFL Sundays: London Games Week 2 | x NFLGirlUK

Week 6 of NFL action is upon us, and with all the excitement of last weekend, the NFL London Games continue. Our resident writer for Liz Bhandari from NFLGirlUK.com takes a look at this, as well as the 6PM Sky Sports game. Check it out.

2:30PM: NFL London: Miami Dolphins @ Jacksonville Jaguars

We get to see another NFL London game as well this Sunday between the Miami Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Miami just got throttled by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but could be getting some reinforcements with the return of Tua Tagovailoa on offense.

Defensively they have somehow gotten ten times worse than last season but luckily face a Jaguars team that struggles to move the football consistently. Trevor Lawrence is starting to settle into his new team but there is a lot of questions regarding the coaching of Urban Meyer. Specifically, his commitment to the run game as well as some other off the field issues.

This is going to be a tight game between two teams that are basically battling for draft position right now. Maybe a win here against an equally bad opponent could end up thrusting them in the right direction again!

6PM: Los Angeles Chargers @ Baltimore Ravens

The Los Angeles Chargers are coming into this matchup after a potential Game of the Year with the Cleveland Browns. They won the game 47-42 with the game not being decided until the very last possession.

The Chargers continue to look like one of the best teams in the league and have all the star power that you would want to have in a roster. Justin Herbert looks like a grizzled veteran out there and can essentially make any throw that you want him too. He has two fantastic receiving threats in Mike Williams and Keenan Allen and a great offensive line to protect him. Even their run game has taken a step forward with Austin Ekeler back and fully healthy.

Defensively, Joey Bosa and Derwin James provide sparks that the rest of their group feeds off of. They have been surprisingly good in this area outside of their game against Cleveland. They will have to be even better this week against a Baltimore team that should be riding high after another seemingly improbable victory. This time coming back from a 22-3 deficit in the fourth quarter to knock off the Indianapolis Colts in overtime.

Lamar Jackson threw for 440 yards and four touchdowns while adding on 65 rushing yards. He was absolutely incredible and made passing the football look easy out there. There should be some concern regarding the lack of a strong run game, but that is what they are built on and should get back to it against a Chargers defense that couldn’t stop Nick Chubb or Kareem Hunt. Defensively, Baltimore had some issues. Until that fourth quarter they couldn’t stop the Colts at all.

This is going to be a wildly close game between two playoff calibre teams in the AFC, but I am going to have to roll with the Chargers in this one. They have been fantastic in each of their wins this season while the Ravens have barely squeaked out wins against a couple of teams they shouldn’t have beaten, including the Detroit Lions.

Without a doubt though, this isn’t a game that you are going to want to miss. The scoring potential is through the roof here!

NFL Sundays: London Games Week 1 | x NFLGirlUK

A London Game and A Battle Between Conferences

We love it when the NFL comes to London, and this is one of those weeks as the Jets take on the Falcons in what could be a heated showdown! Also, we have a big upcoming matchup between two 3-1 teams with a lot of talent spread across their rosters. You don’t want to miss something that could end up being a Game of the Year candidate!

NFL Sundays 6pm Fixture: Green Bay Packers @ Cincinnati Bengals

The Green Bay Packers are coming off a statement victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers, moving up to 3-1 on the year with three consecutive wins. The Cincinnati Bengals are in the same spot with a 3-1 record, recently overcoming a 14-point deficit against the Jacksonville Jaguars to win the game on Thursday Night Football.

The Packers haven’t looked back since their crushing defeat in the season opener against the New Orleans Saints. Aaron Rodgers continues to look like one of the best quarterbacks in the league, Davante Adams is simply unguardable (if that wasn’t a word, it is now!) and has received 45 targets and Aaron Jones has scored five touchdowns! Yes, their defense is a bit of a problem considering they are missing a few guys due to injuries.

Luckily, the Steelers were struggling on offense last week, but the Bengals aren’t. Cincinnati looks completely revamped with Joe Burrow back in the starting lineup. Just last week he threw for 350 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. His chemistry with former college teammate Ja’Marr Chase is also evident by Chase scoring four touchdowns in four games. Their defense also looks a lot better now that they have playmakers all over the field.

This is going to be a very tough game even though Green Bay is the obvious favourites. The Bengals have refused to quit no matter the circumstances and could very well catch the Packers off guard if they come out swinging offensively. I think the Packers are rightfully the favourites, but Burrow could turn it into a shootout quickly!

London Games: New York Jets @ Atlanta Falcons

The Jets grabbed their first win of the season in a shocking upset win over the Tennessee Titans while the Falcons choked a late fourth-quarter lead against the Washington Football Team and fell to 1-3. Neither of these teams have top 20 defenses, they are incredibly reliant upon their team’s ability to score…a lot.

I don’t have a lot of faith in either of these teams right now but what I do know is that this could end up being a shootout. With both teams being incapable of defending the other, these offenses could get going quickly and could have a thrilling finish!

Despite there not being many big names on these teams I think it is more than exciting enough to watch as this game could very well surprise you this weekend.

Soak in all the action and excitement of the NFL this season with We Love Sport for the game. Download the We Love Sport App to see which venue near you is showing the NFL this season.
