Roll out the welcome mat, it looks like football might actually be coming home

“Three Lions on a shirt, Jules Rimet still gleaming. Thirty years of hurt, Never stopped me dreaming”. After a historic victory over Germany in the Euros, England have all eyes set on a Wembley finale. Apparently, football is coming home. Could it be true?

We came close in Russia in 2018. Our first semi-final appearance since the Wembley showdown between two of International Football’s greatest foes in 1996. But the excruciating defeat to Croatia ended the dreams and added to the hurt. Not since the Euros in 1996, staged on home soil, has the nation felt so passionate that England could actually do what they hadn’t done since the 1960s.  In actual fact, it isn’t just 55 years since England won a major honour, it was the last final we took part in! It has to be said, England really have been presented with the best possible chance of finally lifting a trophy. The game against Germany was more than just a huge win against a major rival, it has provided England with a mightly promising route to the final.

Super Southgate

England 11 vs Germany
England Starting 11 vs Germany

It is almost a certainty now, that when the England starting 11 is announced, England fans will call for the head of Gareth Southgate. His football decisions are very polarising and split the fanbase right down the middle. It is impossible to ignore the bizarre decision to have no backup central striker in the squad after leaving Dominic Calvert-Lewin at St George’s Park. It is crazy to consider Manchester United are close to paying £80+ million for Jadon Sancho and the lad can’t even make it onto the field at Wembley.

The fans are crying out for more game time for Jack Grealish and Phil Foden, Southgate though is not playing ball. We can’t sit here and make these claims about who should be playing when what Gareth is doing, is actually working. His success on the field with England is routinely ignored and passed over, simply because the football being played is slightly more cautious and defensive than we would like to see. It isn’t the prettiest football ever played, it is far from perfect…. but it’s working.

55 years of hurt

Germany had defeated England in knock-out competitions on all four occasions, prior to this week, since the defeat at Wembley in the 1966 World Cup Final. In the 55 years since England last won a major honour, Germany (West Germany & East Germany up until 1990 when the two nations reunited) have won three World Cups (1974, 1990 & 2014). Add that to three European Championships (1972, 1980, 1996). That last Euros win is the same win that came from defeating England at Wembley in the Semi-Final on penalties. A defeat caused by a spot-kick miss from Southgate himself.

A sterling job

Southgate has avenged that loss however with yesterday’s victory. The decision to match Germany on the field almost proved successful for Hungary in the final Group F game. Fans may not have agreed, Gareth clearly felt this was the right approach to take. He was correct. While Germany would create more chances in the game, pretty much everything they attempted was counteracted by a firm and confident England. Let’s be realistic, this German squad is not at the level the four-time World Champions are used to fielding. It’s certainly not the strongest German team we’ve faced, but there is still substantial quality on that pitch. England matched it at every level – putting in our best performance of the tournament so far.

We do still have an issue with how well we can keep Harry Kane in the game. At times he looked lost and completely wasted on the pitch. This is no fault of his, we just don’t provide him with enough of the ball. This changed with the introduction of Grealish, evident from the second goal.

The two goals were strong and showed just how much quality we have. Something which completely justifies the bookies 2/1 ‘clear favourites’ price. While we swept Germany aside, they were, on paper, the only significant threat on the route to the final.

Firmly looking down Wembley Way – Football’s Coming Home

That last statement must be followed by saying that it is with no disrespect to the rest of the field, but ultimately England really should be excited for the path ahead of us. Should England defeat Ukraine in Rome on Saturday, either the Czech Republic or Denmark would sit in the way of a place in the Wembley Final. While you should never underestimate opposition in an International knock-out tournament, this is a promising proposition for England and on paper should easily defeat both sides. The Czech Republic tested England last Tuesday in the final game of the Group Stage but in truth, a 1-0 defeat was flattering.

Quarter Final Match Lineups

It was more a case of just getting the job done for an England side that had already qualified for the Round of 16. A knockout game would be different, and you only have to ask France about that. Denmark, while very strong against Wales to knock the Dragons out of the tournament, shouldn’t have enough in the locker to seriously challenge England. It does though seem written in the stars for a potential repeat of 1992 and their historic Euros victory after such a dramatic and emotional opening game. It would make an incredible story and the players will be playing with so much confidence after being the only team in history to lose both of their first games but still qualify for the Round of 16.

The return of Shevchenko

All of this is irrelevant, however, if England cannot defeat Ukraine on Saturday in the Quarter Final. Andriy Shevchenko’s side won their first-ever knockout game in a major tournament last night after a dramatic last-minute goal against 10-man Sweden. Ukraine qualified from the least interesting of the Groups in third place. Behind The Netherlands and Austria due to a single victory against North Macedonia. They would generally be considered the weakest of the remaining teams and currently sit at 33/1 with the bookmakers. They did take The Netherlands right to the edge in a 3-2 defeat in Group C on the opening weekend though. Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City provides a threat from midfield. Plus the experience of West Ham’s Andriy Yarmolenko will be vital for this young and largely domestic side.

It’s certainly not home yet, there is still a long way to go for England in this competition with two huge potential banana skins to avoid. But the country is optimistic and with good cause. Get those welcome mats ready, football really could be coming home.

EUROs Fans View – England vs Germany

England vs Germany, by far the standout fixture (on paper) from the Round of 16. 55 years have passed since England’s only major success on the international stage. A historic 4-2 defeat of West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final at Wembley remains the pinnacle of achievements for the country that created the sport.

While the images of Bobby Moore lifting the trophy high into the sky, sit on the minds of all Englishmen, the Germans have certainly made up for this defeat since. Germany (since Unified) have been involved in every major tournament since this day and continue to make amends for their defeat in our national stadium.

England vs Germany has been drawn together in knockout rounds of either the World Cup or Euros on four occasions since 1966. Germany have won all 4, often by the tiniest of margins but on every occasion adding to the pain and anguish of every England supporter on the global stage. As former England player, pundit and crisp expert Gary Linekar once said:

“Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans win.”

German Apathy

For England fans, the resentment will always remain, and Germany are widely considered our biggest rivals on this stage. Over in Berlin, however, the feeling isn’t quite as mutual. German fans care about the rivalry, but not to the same level – let’s face it, when you’re regularly competing at the highest level you don’t really need to worry about England vs Germany. Former German international and Liverpool player was quoted this week in The Telegraph as saying:

“I would never describe England as Germany’s biggest rivals, our big rivals have always been seen as the most likely to challenge us.”

Well, that one stings. It must be said though, where Germany are normally the expected victors against England, things are very different in 2021. After some shocking performances over the last few years, this German team is not the major threat it used to be and not only do England go into this match as favourites, they are one of the clear favourites to win the tournament as a whole. Especially after some of the huge results over the last few days.

It’s Coming Home?

Doubt and anxiety however remain, and England fans continue to question the capabilities of a Gareth Southgate led team (incredibly harsh considering his success so far, if you ask me). As with all major events on the sporting calendar, we continue our new series by looking at what you, the fans, have to say. We’ve spoken to five England fans and noted their predictions for the starting 11 tonight and the score. While largely consistent across the backline, there are some surprises in these Starting 11’s. Here is what they had to say about the latest England vs Germany fixture:

Matty from Formby – Liverpool & England Fan

Matty’s View: “Front 3- tough choice. Despite poor form, you have to stick with Kane. Sterling must play as he’s the only player looking likely to score. So now it’s picking the final player. I’d go Kane, Sterling, Foden. Allows both Foden and Grealish to play then.

Final Score Prediction: England 1 – 1 Germany (Germany win 2-1 AET)

Jon from Cheshire – Chelsea & England Fan

Jon’s View: “I think there’s been a lot of noise around Kane’s group stage performances, if there’s one game that we need him to step up, this is it. Sterling is the only player to score for us so he more than earns to keep his spot in the squad, with Foden on the other side, I’d rather keep Grealish as a super sub. Mason Mount in attacking midfield for his dangerous balls into the box, with Philips and Rice behind him to try and counter some of Germany’s pressing play.

Back 4 exactly the same as against the Czech Republic as we looked solid, with Pickford keeping his spot in net after a few really decent performances.

I know Germany have goals in them but I think we’re that tight defensively that they won’t breakthrough. We’ll nick a goal back, Harry Kane to score his first of the tournament!”

Final Score Prediction: England 1 – 0 Germany

Steven from Runcorn – Liverpool & England Fan

Steven’s View: “Pickford in goal because he’s been arguably the best keeper at the tournament so far, having kept 3 clean sheets.

A back 3/5 whichever way you slice it just to match Germany up. They’ve played with a 343 in the opening games and I think we can do it better. Walker on the right of a 3 to compensate for Gnabry’s pace, he and Reece James will have their hands full on that side with Gosens also joining the attack. Maguire comes back in after a fine performance against the Czech Republic, Stones has been solid so far too so keeps his place.

Trippier on the left because Havertz is left-footed but he also offers set-piece quality if/when we need it. Reece James gets in there as he’ll be rested having missed the Czech game and he’s also got the pace to counter with on that right-hand side. Rice has been fine so far and Henderson was decent once he came on in the previous game. I think Phillips has had a mixed bag so far but Henderson’s experience in big games especially against opposition like this will be massive for our midfield against the two veterans Kroos and Gundogan.

The front 3 are the most difficult to chose bar Kane. As poor as he’s been so far you can’t write off the captain, when you require a goal from nothing he’s your man. Foden has looked lively so far and the fact Southgate removed him from the squad entirely against the Czech Republic to avoid suspension means he will probably start this game. The final spot has to go to Jack Grealish, the man does not lose the ball and always looks busy going forward, England need more players with the courage that he has if we’re to stand any chance against the big sides.”

Final Score Prediction: England 1 – 0 Germany (Kane goal before 10 mins have passed with England to see out a nervy 80 odd minutes”)

Stephen from Bristol – Bristol Rovers and England Fan

Stephen’s View: “Goalkeeper – Pickford has been brilliant so far and his distribution as a goalkeeper is probably the best in the world. Turns defence into attack very fast.

Defence – Go for our big game players. Walker and Shaw will secure the flanks but will provide support going forward where necessary. Maguire and Stones have been suspect in a back 2 before but I think going for a back 3 is too negative and disruptive when we haven’t conceded a goal so far. Maguire lacks pace but plays positive balls forward through the defensive lines into Kane.

Midfield – There is no reason to change Rice & Phillips – Hendo is a good player to bring on if we need to settle things down. Bring Mount back in as he’s more defensive than others

Forwards – Bring in Sancho. Knows the Germans well and will be another twist from Southgate.

Hopefully, last night is far less stressful than yesterdays matches!”

Final Score Prediction: England 2 – 1 Germany

David from Wigan – Liverpool and England Fan

David’s View: “After watching Germany’s last performance in the group it is clear they are vulnerable on the counter-attack. With this team, it would provide plenty of pace especially coming down either flank with the fullbacks and wingers.

I’ve opted to drop Kane, I’m not questioning Kane’s ability; he is a world-class striker however his performances as of late haven’t been up to the standard. The lack of runs and the constant need for the ball to be played into his feet won’t suit England. Especially coming up against this German outfit. This makes the choice, Rashford; a young, pacey, hungry player who can and will make the runs that Kane won’t.

With this formation, a lot of the attack will be coming from the wings. I have Grealish sitting behind the front line as a CAM to provide the creativity we have clearly lacked. This has been evident as when he has played, he has been one of the few standout players.

I have elected to have both Kalvin Phillips and Henderson as CDM’s to control the midfield; Henderson’s experience and leadership will prove vitally important to what is such a young squad around him. Hopefully, the influence his leadership has on the Liverpool team is able to shine against Germany with England.”

Final Score Prediction: England 2 – 2 Germany (England win 3-2 AET)

The Tour begins with the Lions vs Japan

You could be forgiven for forgetting there is a Lions tour taking place this summer, what with the delayed Euros occupying much of the screen time and column inches, pushing even the most pessimistic Englishman to dare to dream that ‘it’ might be coming home… In fact, with three of the four provinces that make up the British and Irish Lions represented at the tournament (sorry to any Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland fans!) even the most hardened Rugby nut may have taken their eye off the egg-shaped ball recently.

Thankfully We Love Sport’s Shôn Douglas is here to remind you that the best of Rugby players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales are coming together to take on World Cup winners South Africa in the Lions Tour 2021…and it all begins this weekend!

For the first time since 2005, the Lions will take to the field on British soil as they take on Japan at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh. This will be the first meeting between the two sides and Lions head coach, Warren Gatland, is under no doubt as to the Brave Blossoms’ strengths. Speaking ahead of the match, Gatland said: “We’re anticipating a tough game against Japan – a side that likes to play at a high-tempo and shift the ball. We saw throughout the World Cup they have attacking threats across the park and a solid defence and set-piece.”

Lions Tour – The Opposition

Japan arrive in the UK ahead of games against the Lions and Ireland with a 36 player squad including 19 of the team that made it to the Quarter Finals of the World Cup two years ago and 13 uncapped players as they look towards the World Cup in France in 2023. Their astonishing win against South Africa in 2015 earned them fans across the world and the team’s talismanic captain, Michael Leitch is looking forward to running out in front of 16,500 on Saturday afternoon. He said: “Fans in the stadium, as well those watching the match back in Japan and around the world will experience rugby history when Japan take on the British & Irish Lions for the very first time. As a team, we have made our best possible preparations and we look forward to showing the world once again the exciting style of Brave Blossoms and Japanese rugby.”

The Squads

Warren Gatland named his side on Tuesday (22nd June) morning, with tour captain Alun Wyn Jones selected to lead a team featuring eight Lions debutants. Selection has been influenced by 12 players being unavailable, with some yet to join the squad training camp in Jersey due to club commitments including Exeter’s Stuart Hogg, Jonny Hill, Luke Cowan-Dickie, and Sam Simmonds. There are places for Saracens’ pair Owen Farrell and Jamie George following promotion back to the Gallagher Premiership, but they make do with a place on an England heavy bench. There’s no place for breakthrough prospect Louis Rees-Zammit who is the youngest player on this year’s tour.

In something of a departure from previous Gatland tours, the team contains three Scotsmen, including the Six Nations’ top try-scorer Duhan van der Merwe who will be roared on by a quarter-full stadium due to continuing COVID-19 restrictions – the spectre of which will follow the Lions as they head to South Africa on Sunday.

Japan announced their line-up on Thursday and will be looking to captain Leitch and fellow World Cup stars such as Highlanders’ Kazuki Himeno and Clermont wing Kotaro Matsushima to hopefully spring an upset and relive their heroics of 2015.
