Tale of the Tape

The Welterweight Champion, Leon Edwards (20-3), is born in Jamaica but is fighting out of Birmingham, England. He has had a long journey to this position and has defeated the likes of Donald Cerrone, Rafael dos Anjos and Nate Diaz. The fighter has had a hard rap of it though and not always gotten the respect he deserves. He's often been called boring and has only finished 50% of his fights. However, winners win and that's why he has the gold.

Kamaru Usman (20-2) is one of the greatest fighters in the world. He defeated Tyron Woodley in dominant fashion to claim the gold and he's knocked out Gilbert Burns. He's also defeated Jorge Masivdal, twice. One of those fights was a brutal KO. Usman beat arch rival Colby Covington twice too, one also by knockout. The former champion lost his second ever fight, then went on a 19 fight win streak. Then, the fateful night in Utah came, as he lost in the fifth round to Edwards.

How's it going to go down?

Objectively, Leon Edwards knocked out Kamaru Usman in the fifth round to win the title. Subjectively, Kamaru Usman dominated Leon Edwards and was minutes away from yet another convincing title defence.

Usman has been tried and tested against the world's best and has handled it well. For Edwards, his toughest test was Usman. Yes, he won. But even his coaches told him he needs to get the knockout or he's lost. Fair play, he did get the knockout against a man who's never been knocked out before. Lightening doesn't often strike twice though.

We Love Sport prediction

Edwards has home advantage and the recent momentum, but he was losing the last fight quite comfortably until that head kick. No disrespect to Edwards, but it's hard to see Usman not dominating the fight again. He is one of the best to do it, he will just be hoping he doesn't lose concentration in the final round.

Prediction: Kamaru Usman by unanimous decision.
