How the season is shaping up
With 5 games gone, the reigning LaLiga and European Champions Real sit pretty with a perfect record, scoring 15 and conceding only 5, with their toughest test coming at home to Copa del Rey holder Real Betis who they defeated 2-1. At the time of writing, Real in Europe have won their only game, with a 3-0 win coming in Glasgow versus Celtic.
It’s not been quite so perfect for Los Colchoneros, who have won 3 of their opening 5 games, sitting in 7th. Atlético’s loss came at home to Villarreal, whilst they also dropped points to Real Socieded. It’s also not been straightforward for the red side of Madrid in Europe either. A 101st minute winner against Porto came on the opening matchday and they lost 2-0 away to Bayer Leverkusen.
What can we expect?
When Atlético and Real meet, it often leads to a tight, tense affair. Last time out, Atlético got their first win against their rivals in LaLiga since the 2015/2016 season and they will be looking to kickstart their season with a big victory over their neighbours to truly announce their arrival in this new season.
We can expect a fiery affair on Sunday evening, as we can with every Atlético Madrid game. They are of course a fantastic footballing team with great players, but as Manchester United & Manchester City found out, the biggest challenge is dealing with the camaraderie of Simeone’s sides. Saying that, Real have only lost one of the last nine meetings, so it can be said that they have managed to deal with that, and they are the best “big game” team on the planet.
Team News
Atlético will be hoping that Eder Militao and Karim Benzema aren’t fit to return for Sunday’s mammoth clash, as Real have not quite figured out who can be deployed through the middle. Hazard, who replaced Benzema at Celtic Park, scored that night, but struggled massively through the middle against RCD Mallorca so Ancelotti may have to play their Champions League semi-final hero, Rodrygo, as the main forward.
Atlético have selection issues of their own, with Jan Oblak, Stefan Savic, Jose Gimenez and Sergio Regulion all missing from their clash with Leverkusen. Atlético having a depleted team is something that will of course suit Carlo Ancelotti down to the ground.
Irrespective of who is missing for both teams, there is still huge excitement around this game as both teams are full of superstars and are the two last league champions. Tchouameni has settled in great so far after his move from Monaco to Real, but it has to be asked whether he will be able to adapt to playing against Koke and Rodrigo de Paul.
We Love Sport’s Prediction
This game will be a cracker, but we at We Love Sport are going for a Real Madrid 2-0 win. After looking at how the season is gone so far and seeing the injury list for Atlético, then it’s hard to see Vini Jr and Valverde not causing damage. But, you can see for yourself by using our Pub Finder to find a We Love Sport pub near you showing the Madrid Derby.
